Xeomin Kansas City

Xeomin Overview

Xeomin is a prescription medication that is made from botulinum type A bacteria that create botulism, which blocks nerve activity in the muscles and causes a temporary reduction in muscle activity. Once injected, Xeomin creates a softer glow on the face, diminishing facial furrows and wrinkles. It can also be used to treat eye muscle conditions caused by nerve disorders, such as uncontrolled blinking and spasms. A distinct difference between Xeomin and BOTOX is that Xeomin does not have any additives, therefore patients may be less likely to develop a resistance to it. During the initial consultation, Kansas City Aesthetics will discuss the differences between the various muscle relaxers and what to expect based on his initial analysis.

What to expect

Xeomin is an in-office procedure that is usually performed in less than 30 minutes. Prior to treatment, ink marks will be made to the injection sites on the face, and a fine needle will deliver the product directly into the skin. Xeomin is most effective in treating frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead furrows, and wrinkles around the chin area. There is no pain during the injection, but numbing creams may be applied to ease any discomfort caused by the injection prick. Mild swelling and redness may appear on the injection area, which usually subsides after a few hours. After a Xeomin treatment, there is no downtime, and most patients may resume normal activities.

Xeomin Frequently Asked Questions

What is XEOMIN®?

Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) recently received FDA approval for treatment of glabellar rhytids (frown lines between the eyebrows), making it the third neuromuscular agent in the US to receive such approval, along with Botox® and Dysport®. Botox (Allergan) is the most common aesthetic treatment/cosmetic procedure in the world, and has an excellent and proven track record of safety. Xeomin is based on this excellent product, and is similar in action to Botox. In the FDA studies, it was shown to have similar onset of action and duration as Botox.

What are the cosmetic uses of XEOMIN®?

Xeomin, like Botox and Dysport, is FDA-approved for cosmetic treatment of the 11's (frown lines between the eyebrows). Other common uses for all three products include forehead lines and crow's feet lines. Xeomin also received prior FDA clearance for treatment of cervical dystonia (abnormal neck pain) and blepharospasm (eyelid spasm).

Xeomin is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the active substance botulinum toxin type A or to any of the components in the formulation and in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s).

How does XEOMIN® work?

XEOMIN is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles to relax the muscles and decrease their activity. XEOMIN works at the neuromuscular junction, blocking the release of a chemical messenger-acetylcholine-that conveys the signal from nerve terminals and causes muscle fibers to contract.

Is XEOMIN® the same as Botox?

Xeomin, Botox and Dysport are all botulinum toxin products, and they all work to relax facial muscles and prevent wrinkle formation, but the products are not the same. They all have unique names, and differ in dosing and usage. Xeomin does not need to be refrigerated, unlike the other two products.

What are potential advantages of XEOMIN® over Botox?

Xeomin has been manufactured in a unique way to remove any accessory proteins/additives, and this theoretically can result in decreased chance of antibody formation and resistance to the product. Botox has a much longer track record of safety for a variety of cosmetic and medical use indications, and is the gold standard product against which other newer products are compared to.
